Volkswagen Scirocco R goes out of production ahead of facelift
We have a bit of a soft sport for the VW Scirocco R, even if we wish it had the same 4WD setup as the Golf R. But it’s never really sold in the sort of numbers it should have. And now, ahead of a facelift for the Scirocco duie to arrive at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2014, Volkswagen has dropped the Scirocco R from its lineup.
Well, not completely – that would be too much to hope for. But London Mayor Boris Johnson has scrapped the recent extension of the Congestion Charging Zone, which took in most of Chelsea, Kensington and Westminster, and was hugely unpopular. The £8 per day charge was the subject of a public consultation, which found that 86% of businesses wanted the congestion charge lifted.

Mercedes’ new AMG SLS – the gullwinged GT supercar due to appear at the 2009 Frankfurt motor show – is going electric as engineers develop an emissions-free battery powered SLS as an alternative to the 563bhp V8. The eco SLS will have an electric motor powering each wheel, producing a total of 526bhp. Needless to say, for now it remains an engineering prototype – but a spokeswoman told CAR that Mercedes was intent on putting it into production.
